2.2.1 The Two Basic Categories of Legal Authority: (1) Primary Authority; and (2) Secondary Authority

Okay, so there are two levels in the domestic legal system of the United States: state and federal.

 

Within both legal systems, the sources can be broken down into two broad categories of legal authority:

1)      Primary Authority, and

2)     Secondary Authority. 

All of the laws or legal commentary you might encounter will fit into one of these two very general categories.
